Paul Binkley - Guitarist

I am a freelance guitarist and plucked string player. I play concert classical guitar, jazz guitar, classical mandolin and other fretted instruments. I enjoy many styles of music including classical chamber music, Neapolitan songs, Brazilian choro, early music, new music, and of course jazz. Among the ensembles I play with are a tango band, a mandolin quartet, a guitar/flute duo and a trio with guitar, mandolin and accordion.
I began my guitar studies in London, Ontario where I gave my first professional concerts before graduating from high school. My early experience in pop groups led to a serious interest in jazz and classical guitar, and I moved to Boston to complete two years in jazz studies at the Berklee School of Music.
I left Boston to spend several years touring with jazz/rock groups in Canada, then moved to San Francisco to dedicate myself completely to the classical guitar. I completed my Bachelor of Music degree at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and my Master of Arts in Music degree at San Francisco State University, majoring in classical guitar performance.
Since graduation, I have performed as an ensemble player with the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players, the San Francisco Opera, Ballet, and Symphony, the Berkeley Symphony and many other local orchestras. I have also toured nationwide and recorded five CD's with the Modern Mandolin Quartet.
Among my performances with San Francisco Opera have been 'L'Incoronazione di Poppea', 'Orlando Furioso' and 'L'Ormindo' on lute, theorbo and renaissance guitar. My contemporary classical performances include mandolin in George Crumb's 'Ancient Voices of Children' with Dawn Upshaw and the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players, guitar in Michael Tippet's 'King Priam' with San Francisco Opera, and many performances of new music with San Francisco Symphony.
I am guitar instructor at Mills College where I was guitar soloist on the Mills College Centennial Album. I have also recorded contemporary pieces for Opus One Records and Centaur Records. Other recording credits include mandolin on the San Francisco Symphony recording of Prokofiev's 'Romeo and Juliet' with Michael Tilson Thomas.
